What's the Big Deal About Church?

Author: Pastor Emeritus Bruce Humbert, Sauk Trail Baptist Church, Richton Park, IL

What's the big deal about church?  This is more than a title for a book.  It's a question we all need to consider.  After all, the church is under attack in our day and age more than any time in recent memory.  Overall church attendance is in decline, no doubt helped along by the recent pandemic.  But things were trending the wrong way long before we started talking about the merits of masks and vaccines.  The pandemic became both a magnifying glass and a toxic accelerant to problems that were already confronting the church.  And when I say church, let me be clear.  I'm talking about the Local New Testament Church.

TIMELY

Bruce Humbert is a Churchman. His life has been about church from a young boy, through Bible College and then as a pastor for 30 years. His book is hands-on, in-style and a treasure trove of valuable truths. His book is written for now. As I turned each page, one word pervaded my thoughts - TIMELY.

I love this book!

I am grateful to have this resource for myself and our church family! There is a dearth of understanding and clarity on this subject that was most precious to our Lord, His church! Brother Humbert’s book is, in fact, preaching in print that elevates the subject of the church in a way that reflects the heart of Christ for His Bride. Our church family wanted this book, and I also encourage any and everyone to obtain one for themselves.

Brother Humbert describes and develops why the church is a big deal by laying out 8 fundamental characteristics of His church. Brother Humbert states, “My goal is to remind all people who love God, and have a desire to know Him better, that understanding how big of a deal the Church is to Him is crucial to their spiritual life and growth.”

Pastor Humbert makes a BIG DEAL about the church!

In a time of confusion about the necessity of the church and the reason for it, Bro. Humbert writes to help us ponder the BIG DEAL about the church and to embrace it. “What’s the Big Deal About Church?” is a call to the Christian now and the generations to come, to heed what the Bible says about church. This book is written with many years of experience, love, and humility. Our church has purchased and given away this book to every family in our congregation. You won’t regret putting this book in the hands of God’s people. I say let’s make church a BIG DEAL!

Practical and Straightforward

Practical and straightforward describe the author and his writing. Pastor Bruce Humbert has always been one of the most practical and straightforward people I know and those qualities have been a great help to me. The same qualities can be applied to his book “What’s the Big Deal About Church?”. It is a book that is accessible to every reader. By the time someone turns the last page, they will have enough reason to believe that the church is a big deal. If you are looking for a book that provides a concise overview about what the church is to be all about, then this is a resource you should consider.

Necessary!

This book resounds with me. I served as a missionary in Russia for 25 years. I saw the devastation and immorality exhibited in a society where church attendance was prohibited. Life had no value and it became an ‘every man for himself’ lifestyle. When Russians were touched by the Gospel, serving God in the local church became a privilege they did not take lightly.
The United States of America was founded on the Word of God and the freedom to worship Him. Over the centuries, we have lessened that freedom to an obligation few desire to fulfill. In this book, Bruce Humbert explains how harmful and dangerous such a flippant attitude has on the church, the family and society as a whole.
Church is a big deal!
